The alternator in an automobile produces a minimum of 13 volts. The maximum voltage production should be 14.5 volts. The alternator generally lasts about 100,000 miles. After this time, the alternator can start to malfunction and make growling noises in the engine. In addition to this unusual sound, here are other signs that the alternator is going bad.
Burning Wires
If you smell hot electricity underneath the hood, the alternator could be malfunctioning. When this happens, it produces too much electricity and your car’s electrical system cannot handle it. Consequently, the wires will get too hot and their insulation will get too hot.
Dead Battery
Something completely different will happen if the alternator is not producing enough electricity. In this case, it may have problems keeping the battery charged. As such, you will end up with a dead battery that will hold a charge. You need to replace the alternator when this happens.
Dim Headlights
Another sign that the alternator is not producing enough electricity is dim headlights. In addition to the headlights, the interior lights and taillights will also be dim. Now, let’s talk about the alternator producing too much electricity. This will make the lights unusually bright.
Frequent Stalls
It may seem strange that the alternator can make your engine stall, but if it isn’t providing the power that the spark plugs need, the engine will stall. The spark plugs have wires attached to them through which the alternator sense electricity. No electricity means no sparks.
Slow Accessories
Have you noticed that it takes forever for your power window to close lately? This is a sign that the alternator is not providing it with enough power. Other accessories that can slow down or malfunction include the power seats or the USB charging ports.
Warning Light
All of these things will cause the engine control unit to turn on a dashboard warning light. In the case of the alternator, the warning light will be the battery light. Some vehicles are also equipped with a light specific to the alternator. This light is the ALT light.
